When it comes to pursuing our long-term goals, it's not uncommon to feel overwhelmed or lose motivation along the way. However, it's crucial to remember that the actions we take today play a vital role in shaping our future.
Whether you’re trying to leave your 9-5 job or just working to create other options for yourself, there are steps you can take now to lay a solid foundation. In this blog, we'll explore the actionable strategies that have helped me transform my aspirations into reality.
Focus on Winning Your Mornings
First, I recognized the immense value of maximizing my mornings, which became my primary focus for years. While the world was still asleep or preparing for the day, I dedicated a laser-focused block of three hours to purposefully work towards building the life of my dreams.
Let's break it down:
- 3 hours per day x 5 days per week = 15 hours per week
- 15 hours per week x 50 weeks = 750 hours per year
- 750 hours / 24 hours per day = 31.25 days per year
By optimizing just the first three hours of my day, I effectively added an entire month to my year. Realizing the potential life-altering impact that three hours a day can have, I hope you feel empowered to make the most of every minute during this time.
Here are three things that I’ve chosen to focus on:
1. Acquire Specific Knowledge
In today’s day and age, there are an abundance of resources and learning opportunities available to dive into any topic of interest to you. Whether you learn best by listening, watching, reading, or interacting with others, there are countless books, podcasts, courses, and conferences to choose from. Take some time to compile a list of materials that suit your interests, and be vigilant about studying them.
It’s crucial to continue to educate yourself rather than becoming complacent, and with the resources we have available today, there’s no excuse not to be learning!
2. Build New Relationships
Next, building relationships is crucial for both personal and professional growth. Make an effort to surround yourself with people who inspire you and are already living the type of life you desire. This will offer a great opportunity to learn from their experiences, let them guide and motivate you, and even collaborate towards your common goals together. However, it’s important to be selective about the advice that you take and not seek guidance from someone whose life does not align with your aspirations or values.
While in-person interactions like conferences and networking events offer strong opportunities to build new relationships, don’t forget about the power of sites like LinkedIn to connect online. And remember, these relationships that you cultivate can greatly impact your journey towards success.
3. Hold Yourself Accountable
Finally, you must hold yourself accountable for progress by setting specific goals and embracing action. Challenge yourself to take consistent steps, even if you don't have perfect information to work from (From a recovering perfectionist, I encourage you that it's better to act imperfectly than to do nothing at all!).
I used to spend all of my time learning and networking without taking real steps towards my goals. It wasn’t until I held myself accountable to action that I started making considerable progress.
Find Motivation in the Life You Dream Of
Although it may not happen overnight, I firmly believe that building your ideal life is within your reach. In my own journey, in the moments when my motivation wavered, I reminded myself of what I was working towards: making my 9-5 job optional in order to spend more time with my kids and live the life I had always dreamed of.
So, ask yourself… Why are you working toward your specific goals? Let that why serve as your motivation to make progress and continue moving forward. Over time, my actions brought about significant transformations in my life, and I know that you are capable of doing the same.
